Ten years ago, we photographed a couple’s wedding day. She had an eye for beautiful spaces. He built things by hand. We all instantly connected and have been friends ever since. This spring, we photographed them welcoming their sweet baby girl in to the world.
It’s one of our favorite parts of our career. We get to return to families across years, sometimes decades. It’s not lost on me how precious it is to document people’s heirlooms. Long after I’m gone, my photos of love will remain and that feels like a life well lived to me.
Baby M’s session happened all at home, in their intentionally created space and the place they feel most themselves. That’s how we like to shoot newborns. No studio. No forced poses. Just soft morning light moving through a house that becomes the bones of your routines and the arms that hold you in such a tender new phase of your life, the place where you and your baby feel most at ease. Baby M slept in the antique crib that Emily slept in as a baby, their pup Koda snuggled in every chance he got. These tiny details are what makes up a life, and that’s why at home sessions will always feel deeply special.
Emily & David have created such a warm and cozy beautiful home together. Mom’s work as an interior designer (House Franc Interiors) and Dad’s woodworking (Kept Workshop) show up in every thoughtful detail and unique touch. We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful backdrop.
We shot most of this session on film. Emily & David, as talented artists themselves, feel really bonded to film – as do we. Film has a softness digital doesn’t fully replicate, it integrates seamlessly into each of our own family heirlooms. It also matches the slow, unhurried pace we bring to every at-home session.
Sessions like this one stay with us. We get to witness the transformation, when a couple becomes parents, in the very home they’re building a whole life inside of.
We only take a limited number of newborn sessions each month. If you’re expecting and want your family’s first days at home documented this way, reach out early for a film newborn session. The sooner you do, the better we can plan around your due date.
